| When GPS goes dark, machines learn to see underground. |
When Satellites Go Silent
A rescue robot enters a collapsed tunnel after an earthquake. A massive mining vehicle descends hundreds of meters into the Earth. An autonomous submarine slips beneath the ocean surface, where satellite navigation signals cannot propagate through seawater. In each of these extreme environments, our modern navigation lifeline disappears. GPS becomes silent.
This happens not because navigation is impossible, but because the weak radio signals transmitted from Earth-orbiting satellites simply cannot penetrate solid rock, dense concrete, or deep water. When modern machinery operates deep underground, indoors, or underwater, it essentially travels blind—a major challenge in GPS-denied navigation.
The next leap in navigation technology will likely look very different from today's satellite receivers. Instead of listening to signals from space, future vehicles may rely on a compact artificial brain paired with an advanced suite of quantum sensors. In this article, we refer to this potential integrated design concept as Neuro-GNS. It is not a single off-the-shelf commercial product available today; rather, it represents a future navigation architecture combining brain-inspired spatial computing, quantum sensors, lidar, sonar, and conventional inertial navigation.
Why GPS Fails Underground
To understand why we need new underground navigation technology, we first have to examine why current systems fail. GPS and GNSS rely on high-precision timing signals sent from satellites thousands of kilometers above Earth. By calculating microsecond delays between multiple satellites, a receiver calculates its precise location.
However, radio waves are easily attenuated, scattered, or completely blocked by heavy obstacles. Reinforced concrete, deep mining shafts, underground utility corridors, and underwater environments create complete GPS-denied zones. Furthermore, GPS signals are vulnerable to surface-level interference, intentional GPS spoofing and jamming.
To build truly resilient autonomous robotics and subterranean transport systems capable of navigation without GPS, humanity needs self-contained navigation—systems that carry their own spatial logic and physical measuring tools inside the vehicle itself.
The Brain’s Internal Navigation System
Nature solved the problem of navigating without external signals millions of years ago. Mammals do not rely on satellites to find their way back to a nest or cave; they use an intricate biological mapping network within the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus of the brain.
Neuroscientists have identified three critical types of cells that power this biological mapping:
Grid Cells: These specialized neurons fire in a repeating hexagonal grid pattern across space. They act like an internal graph paper, making grid-cell navigation possible by allowing an animal to calculate exact distances and spatial relationships as it moves.
Place Cells: These cells activate only when an individual reaches a specific, recognized location, acting as cognitive landmarks.
Head-Direction Cells: Operating much like an internal magnetic compass, these neurons continuously track which direction the head is facing.
Through a process called path integration, the brain fuses information about speed, direction, and time to update its estimated position continuously. Modern brain-inspired navigation and neuromorphic navigation aim to replicate these biological algorithms in low-power neuromorphic hardware, enabling AI navigation systems to maintain an internal cognitive map without relying solely on external cameras or pre-loaded maps.
GPS tells a device where it is by listening to space. Grid-cell-inspired navigation tells it where it is by remembering how it moved.
The Quantum Sensing Layer
While neuromorphic chips handle spatial computing, they still require raw physical data about motion. Standard mechanical or optical accelerometers accumulate small errors over time—a problem known as drift. After traveling several kilometers underground, a conventional inertial navigation system might be off by hundreds of meters.
This is where quantum sensors for navigation change the equation. By utilizing the quantum properties of supercooled atoms, quantum sensors can achieve astonishing physical measurements:
Quantum Accelerometers and Gyroscopes: Atom interferometers use lasers to manipulate cold atom clouds and can measure acceleration or rotation with exceptional sensitivity. In real vehicles, however, long-duration navigation accuracy still depends on calibration, vibration isolation, sensor fusion, and periodic correction using maps or landmarks.
Quantum Magnetometers: These ultra-sensitive sensors read microscopic variations in Earth’s localized magnetic field, matching them against known magnetic anomaly maps to support quantum inertial navigation.
Quantum Gravimeters: By measuring minuscule variations in gravitational pull caused by underground voids, dense rock formations, or water channels, a quantum gravimeter provides an additional physical anchor for subterranean mapping.
How a Hybrid Neuro-GNS System Works
Rather than a single magic chip, a realistic future Neuro-GNS system will be a hybrid architecture integrating several evolving technologies.
First, a quantum inertial measurement unit tracks acceleration, turns, and tilt. Second, quantum magnetometers and gravimeters scan the physical geology surrounding the vehicle. Third, visual sensors like lidar or sonar map immediate physical obstacles.
Finally, a neuromorphic grid-cell processor fuses all these data streams together, constantly updating an internal spatial grid. When the system returns to a known physical landmark, it automatically corrects accumulated drift—exactly as a human recognizes a familiar hallway.
Real-World Applications and Global Relevance
This hybrid approach opens up transformative possibilities across major industries:
Mine Navigation Systems & Safety: Autonomous drilling vehicles and emergency rescue crews can safely navigate miles beneath the surface without losing position tracking.
Tunnel Mapping Technology: Mapping underground utility pipes, railway tunnels, sewers, and power grids becomes significantly safer and more precise.
Underground Robotics & Disaster Response: Search-and-rescue robots can navigate collapsed buildings, smoke-filled caverns, and earthquake zones where human entry is impossible.
Underwater Navigation Without GPS: Autonomous submersibles can perform long underwater operations with significantly reduced position drift.
Space Exploration: Future lunar and Martian rovers can explore subterranean lava tubes and deep caves where satellite navigation networks do not exist.
In places like India, resilient subsurface mapping holds immense potential. For initiatives under National Quantum Mission India, quantum sensing India represents a core strategic priority. While fully integrated quantum navigation systems are still in research stages, developing hybrid stacks using classical sensors, AI mapping, and early quantum devices offers vast opportunities for underground infrastructure and disaster response.
Realistic Outlook: What is Real Today vs. Tomorrow
It is important to maintain scientific perspective. Entire quantum navigation suites are not yet available as commercial off-the-shelf consumer chips.
Atomic clocks are already widely used in timing infrastructure, while compact quantum magnetometers and other quantum sensors are progressing toward more field deployments. Fully integrated quantum inertial-navigation suites, however, remain an emerging capability. Quantum gravimeters and accelerometers currently remain relatively large, expensive, and sensitive to physical vibrations.
The real promise is not that a robot will suddenly possess a perfect underground map. It is that, in the moments when satellite signals vanish and human visibility fails, a machine may still retain a dependable sense of direction—enough to guide a rescue team, inspect a dangerous tunnel, or find its way home.
The future of navigation will not be one technology overnight replacing another. Instead, it will be a resilient layered system—satellites above us when available, physical sensors around us, and an artificial spatial memory operating inside the machine itself.

Quantum sensing and metrology
